Sonia loves Mary Engelbreit’s art, so I gave her a subscription to Mary’s Home Companion magazine. So far it has been delightful, and, of course, Sonia really enjoys receiving her very own magazine. To order a subscription, call 800-826-3382.

Make a dollhouse. Jon used 1 x 12’s for the floor and plywood for the sides, back and double front doors to create dollhouses for the girls that were 36 x 36 and a foot deep. He pitched the roof and hinged it so the space under the roof could be used as another floor. He placed handles on the sides so we could easily move them and secured the front doors with a latch so the baby couldn’t open them. The following is a list of ideas that Heather used to decorate both her dollhouse and Sonia’s dollhouse:

Cover walls with wallpaper from wallpaper sample books, wrapping paper, or contact paper.

Cover floors with carpet, samples or left over from your room, contact paper, wallpaper, or linoleum tiles.

Buy windows from hobby shop and gather fabric for drapes.

Use a shampoo or lotion pop-up lid as a trash can.

Take pretty material and cut out a rectangle or square with pinking shears to make a rug.

Take earrings that look like lamps and use as wall sconces. Heather received a pair of earrings that were translucent pink roses. She cut off the backing and hung on wall as rose wall sconces.

Fill miniature baskets with miniature dried flowers for arrangements around the house.

Decorate a miniature Christmas tree with little bows, tiny colored glass balls, and other ornaments. Wrap small pieces of styrofoam with colorful foil and tie with gold twine for Christmas packages to be placed under the tree. You can use beads for Christmas lights.

Make miniature food out of modeling clay.

Cut out miniature pictures from gift catalogs, glue to posterboard for added strength and use as pictures to be hung on the wall or as books or magazines to be placed on the coffee table.

The black bottom of the Oil of Olay night cream can be used as a pot for a plant (a leaf or branch from a silk arrangement) or for a dried flower arrangement.

Use scraps of material to make simple pillows and bedspreads. You can use eyelet or lace to go around bedspread.

For a clock, cut out picture of a clock from a gift catalog, glue to posterboard and hang on wall.

Use miniature ceramic dogs and cats and place around house as pets.

A small pocket mirror can be framed or bordered with ribbon and hung on the wall.

Furniture was purchased from shops all over St. Louis. Ask the relatives to consider dollhouse furniture when making gift selections.
