Counting Your Blessings

While winter is still upon us, instead of wishing for spring’s arrival, enjoy the last fleeting moments of this glorious season. Winter is my favorite season for many reasons. Outdoors, I savor the silence and stillness it brings to the countryside and long for sunsets when I stand upon a favorite spot in the woods and gaze in awe at the delicate design of the majestic branches against the magnificent sunsets only winter displays. And I’m thankful darkness falls early because I relish the unhurried evenings of continuous romantic candlelight, cozy fires, and hours upon hours of journeys with my family through the enchanted lands our books take us. No other season provides the opportunities of these luxuries the way winter does. Besides, even slumber is sweeter between flannel sheets and loads of warm covers. Enjoy!

One evening while waiting for dinner to finish cooking, I decided to take a walk around my mom and dad’s lake. It was a beautiful night—cold, clear, and brisk. The stars were twinkling overhead as God had just pulled down the shades on the hillsides. When I reached the dam, I looked back across the lake to see the warm glow of lights in the cabin. As I approached, I could smell our fire’s smoke mingled with the wonderful aroma of home cooking. Then music filled my ears with the delightful chatter of my children and the strong and kind voice of my husband. The drapes were open, so I stood outside the picture window looking in upon the most beautiful sight anyone could behold—family—playing, giggling, smiling, and talking. Truly, there’s no place like home, and no one happier than those who care for the home and all the loved ones within its walls.
