JON and CANDY SUMMERS have been married since 1978. Jon graduated from Ranken and has worked as an electrician for over 30 years. Candy graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education but chose to homeschool their four children. Together they have homeschooled since 1980, have faithfully honored God and served homeschooling families as leaders of the homeschooling movement since 1987, and served as leaders of the North County Christian Homeschool Association from 1987 to 1998 which often drew over 500 people to monthly meetings and typically over 300 to field trips. From 2005 they began serving this group again, now bringing families into their home each month to disciple them according to God’s WordJon and Candy have led Missouri’s Christian Home Educators Fellowship State organization since 1993. They coordinate CHEF’s Annual State Conference and Curriculum Fair, which is considered to be one of the top two or three conferences in the country. Their daughter, Sonia, now handles the conference’s Exhibit Hall and helps her father and mother immensely with all the many details involved in putting on a conference of this size. Their sons, Jedidiah and Josiah, also help their parents with the conference.
They have published a newsletter since 1987, which is now emailed to thousands of homeschoolers throughout Missouri and across the country, and authored a book and planner by the same title: There’s No Place Like Home. Their daughter Sonia, now manages their website and mails out their books. Their sons, Jedidiah and Josiah, along with Sonia, take pictures for the website. Candy’s articles have been published in numerous national homeschooling publications including the book, Things We Wish We Had Known. Together, Jon and Candy also co-author in-depth chronological Bible studies which Jon uses for his sermons for the church he pastors, the Lord’s Family Fellowship, a family integrated church dedicated to equipping families to train up generations for God’s throne room. In 2003 they began a family business, Summers on the Lawn, a complete lawn care and landscaping company, which involves their entire family. While they all collaborate on the intimate daily details of the business and work together to accomplish the manual labor involved in their business, Jon specifically manages the business along with Jedidiah, Candy designs landscaping, Sonia takes care of the bookkeeping and taxes, and also helps her mother design landscaping, Jedidiah keeps in closest contact with the customers, schedules the day’s work, logs all the jobs, payments, and mileage, and takes care of the maintenance of the equipment, while Josiah helps the men almost every day now. He, like Jedidiah, started putting in a man’s day of work when he turned 13. Together, the family also weekly cares for Candy’s elderly parents and works to manage both their parent’s homes and their own. When not working together-which they deeply enjoy-the family enjoys wonderful conversations over leisurely candlelight meals, and then reading books aloud and playing games each evening. They love history and theology and so spend much time studying these together. Their favorite time period is the Reformation and early American History. They also enjoy four wheeling, hiking, horseback riding, tennis, scenic rides, traveling to America’s historic sites… OUR VISION Many years ago, God gave Candy and I a vision for our ministry in the homeschooling community, the one we adopted for our service to Christian Home Educators Fellowship: Leading with a Vision--Training Generations for God's Throne Room. In recent years, however, we have become deeply grieved over the condition of homeschooling, as an increasing number of parents have strayed from this vision by relinquishing their God-mandated responsibility to disciple their own families to learning centers and youth groups. As a matter of fact, we consistently discuss this departure from homeschooling with leaders across the country because we see it as a snare to lure parents away from their duties to raise children up in the admonition of the Lord. And sadly, like us, leaders nationwide are witnessing the detrimental effect this is having on their families and the entire homeschooling community. However, it is this generational vision that encourages us to contend earnestly for families' lives to be centered on God. Therefore, we pursue this course, which God has placed us on, with an invincible faith in God's grace and mercy that His purpose will be accomplished for His glory and pleasure, working hard to maintain an eternal vision, God’s vision, of families firmly planted together in His kingdom. Homeschooling is a way of life--God's divine covenantal plan for parents and children to be discipled by Him. It is not about academics; it is not about bringing school home; it is about being obedient to God and seeking Him first, because when we do this, everything else falls into place, and our children will stand before kings and lead God's people. So since 1987, we have imparted this life-changing message of God's generational vision for homeschooling through messages on the magnificent authority of His Word and the great treasures that lie therein, the Hebrew method of education, biblical discipleship, the inestimable blessings of God, joyful and triumphant living, obedience unto death, suffering as a blessing from God, God's grace, prayer, repentance, walking victoriously, training for leadership, marriage, discipling sons, discipling daughters, family worship, running a family business, family celebrations, book reviews, home decorating, parties, family excursions, ideas on how to teach different subjects ... and all with this in mind: "So teach us to number our days that we may present to Thee a heart of wisdom." Years ago, homeschoolers said that our meetings were like revival meetings and that they were so excited when they returned home that they could not sleep. We fervently pray that our continued labor towards this vision generates another revival among homeschooling families that will light a fire hotter and brighter than ever before.THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOMEThe following website is a partial compilation of our love letters to our homeschooling families taken from our newsletters and workshops from 1987 to the present. The articles are not in the order of when they are written, which could be confusing because of the changes in our children’s ages and our life’s circumstances. Candy and I have homeschooled since 1980. Our first daughter was born in 1980, Sonia in 1988, Jedidiah in 1990, and Josiah in 1995. There’s No Place Like Home represents what we hold most dear to our hearts, expressing our deepest feelings for our family while also representing all the time and work we have given to help families realize that truly, There’s No Place Like Home. Godly homes are the only hope for this dying and desperate generation. God is calling His own home to be a separate and peculiar people, a people who love their Lord, their spouses, and their children- a people called out to live their lives for Him. We are God’s remnant, a people called by Him to raise up godly generations prepared for His throne room. We are honored to serve such a dedicated, committed, lovely, godly group of people. Psalm 127:3 “Beloved, children are a gift from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward.” Parents spend this fleeting time wisely! Each day with your children is a precious gift, so enjoy the blessings of your time together. Disciple your children every waking moment. Praise your precious ones often, caress them when they are within reach, smile each time you look upon their adorable faces, laugh and play often, and love them as if this were their last day on earth. Above all trust in the Lord, acknowledge Him in all you do, and be obedient. Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began this good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 3:20,21 “Because it is He who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to His power that works within us, to Him be the glory…to all generations forever and ever.” Our love to you, Jon and Candy
